【SDG 15】New Taipei Metropolitan Park

2019-10-09
New Taipei Metropolitan Park
To create an exceptional environment for riverside recreation, beginning in 2008, the New Taipei City government has renovated Erchong Floodway into New Taipei Metropolitan Park. The park spans 424 hectares, approximately 16 times the area of Da’an Forest Park, making it the largest riverside park in Taiwan. People can enjoy the large, green ecological park space, where flood safety has been prioritized.

The area from the north of Chongxin Bridge to the south of Zhongshan Bridge is centered on the large-area open landscape. In addition to properly preserving the existing arbors, the central canal has been expanded to create a major landscape water area, enabling the water channel to pass through the center of the park, thus enlivening the landscape and presenting a tranquil sight. A waterfront activity space has also been provided next to the water area, allowing for tourist activities close to the water. The ecological landscape of gentle slopes and abundant flowers blends into the landscape in a smooth dynamic line, enabling people to walk in the spacious and comfortable landscape. This park connects to the passenger line of the A2 station of the airport MRT, becoming one of the most characteristic landscapes in the metropolitan area.

The New Taipei Metropolitan Park features a circular bicycle lane on the Erchong Floodway, a high-quality riverside bicycle land system with a total length of 54 km (20 km of main line and 34 km of branch lines). The park also features a variety of recreational facilities, such as sports fields, locomotive practice sites, and thematic playgrounds with characteristics landscapes (e.g., a clover land slide and big hornet sand pit). Additionally, photographic spots in the park, such as the Wedding Ring Confession Square and Bubble Girl Major Landscape, have been laid out.

The riverside park has facilitated the transition of New Taipei City into an internationally renowned waterfront city. The park has attracted tourists from across the globe who come for recreation and sports. The nearby territorial waters also function as a world-class sporting space. For example, the Breeze Canal of Erchong Floodway has become a central spot for the training of Taiwanese water sports talent.
