【SDG 5】2022 New Taipei City Christmasland Tour × Orange the World Campaign

2022-12-15

On December 15, more than 30 diplomats from 15 countries, including Ambassador Andrea Bowman of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Director Sandra Oudkirk of the American Institute in Taiwan, were invited to attend the 2022 New Taipei City Christmasland Tour × Orange the World Campaign. Led by Mayor Hou Yu-ih, the diplomats joined numerous department chiefs of city government and representatives from various women's groups to attend a pop-up event held at the Dreamy Corridor of Christmasland and "say no to violence."

Since 2008, landmarks in numerous cities worldwide have routinely flashed an orange light to indicate their support for Orange the World, a campaign initiated by the United Nations to eradicate gender-based violence. Since 2020, Christmasland has set up a light corridor for this purpose, and a pop-up event has been organized each year for the Mayor and female diplomats to pledge their commitment to support gender-based violence prevention.

This year marks the first time that a Dreamy Corridor is established; it consists not only orange lights, but also white and purple lights, which symbolize the White Ribbon Campaign (against domestic violence) and the Purple Ribbon Campaign (men's support against gender-based violence), respectively. Furthermore, the increasing number of male diplomats joining this year's pop-up event reflects the fact that the support for SDG 5 Gender Equality has become a worldwide trend.

New Taipei has the largest female population in Taiwan. Mayor Hou indicated that the city government cares about the opinions and rights of women and has spared no effort to prevent gender-based violence and provide gender friendly support, thereby ensuring that all women in New Taipei feel safe and respected and have the freedom to develop themselves. The city government also greatly values public–private collaborations, which have enabled women to engage in community-based volunteer work that focuses on gender-based violence.

In addition to the Dreamy Corridor, the other activities associated with the tour include a light show in Christmasland, an SDG achievement exhibition held at the Comma Lab at the City Hall, and a photo exhibition organized by the Rainbow Cities Network (RCN) for queer refugees worldwide. Also, a featured presentation titled Gender Friendliness and the Prevention of Gender-based Violence was also delivered by Director Hsu Chih-chi of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Center, New Taipei City Government.

To introduce New Taipei's achievements to the foreign guests, these events were attended by numerous department chiefs of New Taipei City Government, including Commissioner Yang Tsung-min of the Tourism and Travel Department, Commissioner Chang Ching-Li of the Social Welfare Department, Commissioner Chang Ai-ching of the Department of Information, and Director General Yao Ching-yu of the Secretariat.

The foreign guests present at this year's events include: Ambassador Andrea Bowman of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ambassador Oscar Adolfo Padilla Lam of Guatemala; Ambassador Roudy Stanley Penn of Haiti; Director Sandra Oudkirk of the American Institute in Taiwan; Trade Representative Yip Wei Kiat and Deputy Trade Representative Philip Ong of the Singapore Trade Office in Taipei; Representative Chung Byung-Won of the Korean Mission in Taipei; Representative Daniel Lorincz of the Hungarian Trade Office, Taipei; Representative Jere Tala of the Finland Trade Center; Deputy Director Lukasz Weremiuk of the Polish Office in Taipei; Deputy Director Claudia Fontana Tobiassen of the Trade Office of Swiss Industries; Commissioner Patrick Hafenstein of Trade and Investment Queensland; Director Kallaya Leewongcharoen of the Thai Trade Office, Taipei; and diplomats from Germany, Czech Republic, and Malaysia. Also present at the event were members of the American Club Taipei and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry France Taiwan.
