【SDG 5】Responding to the UN’s Orange the World Campaign, Diplomats Gather at Christmasland in New Taipei City to Say No to Gender Violence!
2023-12-15
Each year from November 25th to December 10th, the United Nations' Orange the World campaign is dedicated to ending gender-based violence. Since 2019, New Taipei City has joined this initiative by building the Orange Light Corridor at Christmasland, inviting diplomats to participate in the stand against gender violence and the fight against violence towards women. On the 15th, Deputy Mayor Ho-jan Liu, acting on behalf of the mayor, convened with ambassadors, representatives, and members of international chambers of commerce, as well as representatives from women's groups in New Taipei City, at the Wisteria Pixie Light Corridor. Together, they collectively declared their commitment to saying no to gender-based violence, affirming New Taipei City's status as a gender-friendly city.
Ho-jan Liu stated that in line with principles of gender friendliness and anti-violence, the New Taipei City Government has been actively implementing relevant policies. Besides establishing the Orange Light Corridor and the Wisteria Pixie Light Corridor at Christmasland, the city has also installed gender-friendly restrooms and feminine hygiene product dispensers at the B1 floor of the Civic Plaza. In November 2023, the city inaugurated Taiwan's first gender equality base, the "All Gender NeST Room." This facility includes a sex education-themed playground for children and a feminine hygiene product museum, enabling visitors to Christmasland to understand the concept of gender friendliness. This is a testament to New Taipei City's dedication to realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for gender equality and its continuous progression towards an inclusive, friendly, and diverse city.
Liu also showcased the largest Christmas tree canopy in the 2023 Christmasland in New Taipei City, the "Dessert Star," to the guests. He invited everyone to visit the "All Gender NeST Room" and then enjoy the Christmasland, watch the Christmas light projection show, and experience the grandeur of New Taipei's Christmas celebration to create sweet memories.
This year's event saw the participation of representatives including Maya Yaron from the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, Paulius Lukauskas from the Lithuania Trade Representative Office, Matthieu Branders from the Belgium Office Taipei, Mohamed Hagi from the Republic of Somaliland Representative Office in Taiwan, and representatives of women's groups in New Taipei City, with over 50 guests attending. They engaged in discussions on international and local gender issues and policies.
