New Taipei City Gender Friendly Community
As part of the gender-equality project in New Taipei City, Longxing Community invited its residents as well as instructors and students from the National Taiwan University of Arts to jointly decorate the aforementioned dark alleys with wall paintings to transform them into bright and unique places. The painted alleys set an example as Longxing became the first gender-equal community in New Taipei City. In 2016, the city launched gender-equality projects and subsequently strove to expand these projects in 2017 to achieve the goal of gender equality within the community. Beginning with families and communities, the New Taipei City government has implemented friendly measures, built safe environments, and raised awareness of gender equality among its citizens. In the Longxing Community, the 30–40-year-old alleys were renovated and became bright and clean with flat surfaces; this enabled residents to walk through them more easily and increased safety for women at night. The renovation represents the gender equality achieved by the community.

Four tasks must be undertaken to develop a gender-equal community, namely hosting workshops to develop gender awareness among community residents, holding focus groups for discussions among community leaders, counting community resources, and launching gender-equality campaigns associated with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. Leaders from multiple communities must brainstorm as part of focus group discussions to identify problems of high concern to residents. Accordingly, each community can develop a unique project for achieving gender equality.

Most elderly people, including elderly widowers, in communities are women. To improve quality of life among such women, governments must encourage them to join local woman’s clubs. After her husband passed away, Mrs. Liu seldom left her home initially. However, after joining the woman’s club in Longxing, she began to spend much of her time having afternoon tea with her friends. Gradually, she was able to escape her solitude. She is now a community volunteer and regularly calls or visits new residents of the neighborhood. She has made many friends and become cheerful.
