Aeration is the process of introducing air into water to increase dissolved oxygen levels. When dissolved oxygen levels become too low, foul odors and eutrophication are more likely to occur. This is especially common during hot summer weather and seasonal transitions, when oxygen levels decline more rapidly and can even cause fish to die from hypoxia.

The New Taipei City Environmental Protection Bureau deploys aeration boats that lower aeration pipes beneath the water's surface. Working together with microbubble generators and pure oxygen equipment, these boats release fine bubbles that disperse throughout the water, increasing dissolved oxygen levels, enhancing the river's natural self-purification capacity, reducing unpleasant odors, and helping protect aquatic ecosystems.
