【Event Highlights 02】Opening remarks by Google, UN ITU, and global city leaders
2022-05-30
The "2022 ING Earth Day Forum in New Taipei" held by New Taipei City on April 21 focused on sustainable topics, including "low-carbon mobility" and "SDG City Leaders." More than 20 speakers attended the Forum online and offline globally from 4 states, 6 time-zones, 10 countries, and 15 cities as well as various international organizations, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), Global Social Economy Forum (GSEF), Google, Mobility In Harmony (MIH), and Japanese think tanks.
In the opening session, Ms. Tomomi Matsuoka, Google Earth Outreach Program Manager, shared with us the innovative technology Google Earth is applying to reduce carbon emissions. It is estimated that to keep the planet livable, the CO2 emissions on earth should be halved by 2025 and eliminated by 2050. In other words, we need to take action immediately to avoid the worst scenario.
As transportation and buildings are the largest CO2 emitters, Google is deploying AI and technicians to collect the emission data and to locate the primary emission sources. Take what they are developing in Japan for example, Google Smart Data is a tool that can calculate the total carbon footprint of a city and find out the highest emitters. In addition, combining with AI and Google Earth, Google Smart Data can compute the total carbon emission from vehicles in a city.
Google is making these tools open sources for cities to achieve their own green action plans. To implement SDGs, let’s embrace the newest technology and mindset.
UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is operating a program named “The Partner2Connect Digital Coalition” to make use of digital technology in achieving SDGs. During the COVID-19 times, ITU has utilized the strengths from governments, academia, and business sectors to create an eco-system that accelerate the digitalization of society.
ITU also works with New Taipei City by creating an internship project that encourages college students to assist with the data collection in buildings. This project has trained local youths to have a better understanding of their neighborhoods and the international goals of curbing the climate change.
The ING Earth Day Forum not only invited business representatives to make remarks in the opening, but also invited city leaders from UCLG ASPAC, Japan, Australia, and the United States. To watch the full speeches, please visit our video section on this website!
