Six major caretaking networks for the homeless in New Taipei City
A homeless service network was established, introducing outdoor homeless service centers and providing assistance and accommodation for the homeless. A total of 63 institutions provide care and accommodation services. In addition, shelters for the homeless, social rehabilitation centers, and happy residences provide care, emotional support, medical care, early job training, and employment services to help them return to society. Moreover, in the event of a low temperature warning, various social welfare institutions coordinate to provide beds for the homeless in temporary accommodations to escape from the cold.

A homeless person who goes by the alias “A-Che” used to drive a taxi and started drinking excessively due to family issues. After staying at MacKay Hospital for over 10 days, he was referred to a social rehabilitation center by social workers. At first, A-Che was not accustomed to the rehabilitation center and was quite unhealthy due to past heavy drinking. During his stay at the center, A-Che enrolled in a farming class and participated in a temperance program at a hospital. After carefully assessing the direction his life was headed, he adopted a normal daily routine, a life goal, and a plan. Everything became completely different since. Now, A-Che has found a construction job. It is exhilarating to see how the social workers’ care and medical assistance and classmates’ care and support have helped A-Che find himself again and move toward a promising future.
