【SDG 5】Gender Equality Hub Next to Christmasland in New Taipei City: Taiwan's First Sex Education Venue for Children
2023-11-01
The New Taipei City Government has been promoting gender equality in recent years. In collaboration with the non-profit organization, Friendly-to-All Co-Parenting Organization (hereinafter referred to as the Organization), the shops in the Citizen Plaza of which the former leases have expired were transformed into the All Gender NeST Room, a public educational facility for gender equality inaugurated on the 1st of the month. Attendees included the New Taipei City Director General Chingyu Yao of the Secretariat, Commissioner Mei-Chen Lee of the Social Welfare Department, as well as city councilors I-Chen Chiang, Kuan-Ting Cho, Shu-Chun Huang, and Hsiang-Yi Tai. Some kindergarten teachers and students also came to participate in the event, creating a lively atmosphere.
How do you teach gender equality? All Gender NeST Room offers an environment for children to learn through play
The mother of two children and Organization Chairperson, Chen Yi considers it too late to start gender equality education for children in elementary school. She stated, "Adults in Taiwan aged 35 and above have not received gender equality education, so teaching children about sex and gender from a young age has become a major concern for these parents."
Therefore, creating an urban space centered around gender equality and children's rights has become the goal of the Organization. They hope that at the All Gender NeST Room, children can immerse themselves in a gender-friendly environment from an early age and learn about gender education through play as parents also learn how to educate children.
Immersive gender equality base of 155 square meters connected with gender-friendly restrooms outside the classroom
Chen Yi expressed gratitude to the New Taipei City Government for their cross-departmental collaboration, allowing the most conveniently located prime space at the interchange of the three public transportation systems to be dedicated to the children of New Taipei City. The All Gender NeST Room, as introduced on the Organization’s Facebook page, is a place fun and safe for children and easily accessible by public transportation. This 155-square-meter indoor space includes a children's play area with a focus on sex education themes, a museum of sanitary products, special displays, a gender equality book corner, and a multi-functional classroom area for lectures, workshops, and theatrical performances. It extends from the indoor space to the outdoor public area, connecting to gender-friendly restrooms and a vending machine for diverse sanitary products. The layout aims at creating an immersive gender equality surrounding the New Taipei City Christmasland. Visitors to Christmasland are encouraged to explore this space of gender equality while enjoying educational and entertaining games and guided tours.
Play area design features imagery of reproductive organs- Chen-Yi: It’s a challenge to materialize playground equipment for sex education
"The climbing net symbolizes the fallopian tubes, while the colored balls in the ball pit represent eggs," further explained Chen Yi. She went on to mention that women typically release around 400 to 500 eggs throughout their lifetime. Originally, they intended to place 400 balls in the ball pit, but later realized it was too few and increased it to 5,000 balls. The children's play area is designed with imagery of reproductive organs, including the uterus, penis, vagina, fallopian tubes, and more, aiming to help children correctly understand their own physiological organs through play. Chen Yi pointed out that materializing playground equipment that meets both educational goals and safety standards was a challenge. Some manufacturers expressed difficulty in creating curved components, such as those representing fallopian tubes made of metal or the wooden representations of penises. “Nonetheless, after a preliminary inspection, inspectors confirmed that the distances and angles were accurately executed, and the impact protection data for the floor mats exceeded safety standards.”
New Taipei City sets a precedent in Taiwan by launching the first gender equality hub - Chingyu Yao: A concrete practice of Mayor Yu-Ih Hou’s gender quality policies
Director General Chingyu Yao stated that since New Taipei City Hall’s completion in 2003, the launch of the first gender equality hub and sex education facility for children in Taiwan in the Citizen Plaza 20 years later is a milestone that reflects the New Taipei City government's commitment to equality and human rights. It is also a concrete practice of Mayor Yu-Ih Hou's policy commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) regarding gender equality. This initiative allows citizens to be familiarized with gender equality in their daily lives, making New Taipei City a continuously progressive city.

This achievement is the result of the collective efforts of various departments.
