【SDG 9】New Taipei's 5G Smart Poles Win Gold at Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards Leading the Way to Build a Sustainable Environment

2025-09-11

New Taipei City Government, guided by the principle of sustainable development, launched the “5G Smart Pole” initiative to enhance the urban environment, improve residents' quality of life, and achieve energy-saving and carbon-reduction goals. Recognized as a model of innovation in smart city and sustainable governance, the project earned New Taipei City the Gold Award in the Environmental Sustainability category (SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) at the 5th Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards, part of the 2025 Taiwan and Asia-Pacific Sustainability Awards. The award was presented on September 11 at the Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1, with Chen Fu-Tien, Director of the Information Management Center, attending on behalf of the city.

The 2025 Taiwan and Asia-Pacific Sustainability Awards, organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), honor outstanding initiatives aligned with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, announced in 2015. The awards recognize projects that build international consensus and accelerate progress toward global sustainability targets.

Chen noted that as the most populous city in Taiwan, New Taipei has prioritized the 5G Smart Pole as a key smart city infrastructure to enhance quality of life. By adopting a pioneering pre-installed conduit system to reduce repeated road excavations, the city has lowered carbon emissions and preserved urban aesthetics. The Smart Pole serves as a multifunctional platform, integrating 5G, IoT, video streaming, smart lighting, environmental sensing, solar and wind power, and digital signage. These capabilities enable tasks such as real-time monitoring of air quality and noise levels, while advancing renewable green energy storage and carbon reduction goals. The initiative supports New Taipei in building a healthier, safer, and greener urban environment, enhancing city management efficiency, and driving the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable, and smart city.

Since its launch in 2021, the 5G Smart Pole has earned international recognition, including the 2023 WITSA Smart City Award, the 2023 IDC Future Enterprise Awards (Taiwan and Asia-Pacific), the 2024 Smart City Innovation Application Award (Smart Government category), and the 2025 Smart 20 Awards. This year, it further distinguished itself by winning the Gold Award in SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure at the Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards. These achievements underscore New Taipei City's ongoing efforts to advance a vision of a sustainable smart city, fostering environmental sustainability, social inclusiveness, and shared prosperity for its residents.
