【SDG 12】New Taipei City facilitated a memorandum of understanding between the Green Industry Association and the Plastics Industry Development Center
2019-10-09
On August 16, 2018, New Taipei City deputy mayor Wu Ming-ji led the Green Industry Association on a visit to the Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC). Witnessed by the deputy mayor, the Green Industry Association and PIDC signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the goal of using PIDC’s professional techniques to manufacture recycled plastic material out of plastic waste. In addition, plastics traders in New Taipei City have been encouraged to support this endeavor and create a new opportunity for participating in a circular economy.
Presently, New Taipei City produces 76,000 tons of plastic waste each year, equivalent to the weight of 13,000 elephants. Through this collaboration and exchange between the Green Industry Association and PIDC, the government expects to facilitate resource recovery by leveraging PIDC’s research and development abilities and technology for reusing plastic waste. In addition, plastic product manufacturers in New Taipei City, which constitute one-fourth of the manufacturers of Taiwan, are encouraged to utilize recycled plastic materials and set a new benchmark for the New Taipei City circular economy.
The Economic Development Department opined that to solve the ecological harms caused by plastic waste, New Taipei City Environmental Protection Administration must continually promote the earth-friendly policy of “no plastics” to contribute to source reduction. The hope is that this memorandum of understanding can combine New Taipei City’s plentiful industrial capacity with PIDC’s technology to establish a sustainable supply chain and further the sustainable development of New Taipei City.
