【SDG 4】New Residents' Second Generation Capacity Building Project

New Taipei City is the city with the largest number of new residents in the country. With the development of the ASEAN Economic Community, it is also an educational opportunity to flip the second generation of Southeast Asian new residents. Therefore, the Education Department of the New Taipei City Government has been planning to handle The "New Residents' Second Generation Capacity Building Project" which is a 12-year talent training program from elementary school, junior high school to high school. The target is not limited to the children of new residents, but any student who is interested in Southeast Asia can participate in through registration.
The aim of the project is to empower second-generation children of new residents, to take advantage of its own dual languages and cross-cultural characteristics, supplemented by domestic and foreign cultural awareness, career recognition and corporate internship program, and encourage students to look into the ASEAN and internationally, to become the future global leaders. In addition to cultivating children of new residents, the project also blends the spirit of the“ Grandma ’s Bridge Project ”, which encourages the second generation of new residents to bridge the culture of their mother country. In 2015, 4 groups of new residents’ parents and children were selected to head back grandparents ’ family in Vietnam and Thailand. With the full recording of the touching interaction between the three generations, which is produced into micro-films, to align with educational programs to deliver further to schools of the city on multi-cultural purpose.
In 2015, the project has conducted summer camp training. Selection from 162 students, from 20 elementary and junior high school students and 24 high school is conducted and teacher led a team to Thailand and Vietnam for a 7-day cultural experience and corporate internship. Many children reflected that trip had an enlightening effect on their future career planning, which continued to 4 sharing sessions of high schools vocational students, with the hope of harvest, spread and ferment.
