The New Taipei City Government, committed to aligning with international indicators, is building a second administrative center that focuses on carbon neutrality. On October 7, in collaboration with the Taiwan Design Research Institute and Benzhi Design Consultant, the city government hosted the “Future City: New Taipei Sustainable Forum” at the Comma Lab. The forum explored sustainable exhibitions, circular economy, spatial design, and comprehensive urban planning, with a goal of setting a new vision for the sustainable city of the future.

The forum highlighted design’s role in driving urban sustainability and attracted 60 experts and scholars from design, curation, and academia, alongside students from Minerva University and National Taiwan Normal University. Led by Wu Yu-hsuan, Team Lead at the Taiwan Design Research Institute, the forum included CN Flower Founder Ling Tsung-yung and Yeah Yeah CEO Wang Ting-shuo, who shared insights on carbon-reducing exhibitions through circular economy. Chung Bing-hung, founder of archicake design, and Liu Fang-yu, Director of the New Taipei City Design Center, discussed initiatives for sustainable urban design, while the Secretariat of New Taipei City Government and Miso Soup Design introduced ideas for a modern carbon-neutral building.

In his opening address, Deputy Mayor Chu Ti-chih emphasized the importance of design in urban governance, noting that 70% of global carbon emissions stem from cities and thus making cities critical to addressing climate challenges. He expressed hope that New Taipei’s second administrative center will integrate digital twin models, international indicators, and carbon neutrality principles to elevate New Taipei’s global influence and urban brand.

Ling Tsung-Yung demonstrated versatile applications of movable display stands to showcase how design can enhance environmental sustainability and aesthetics. Wang Ting-shuo introduced a carbon-reducing strategy based on an innovative rent-to-use model, underscoring its potential to significantly reduce emissions. Chung Bing-hung and Liu Fang-yu shared their successful experiences in sustainable urban design and emphasized that design is not only an art form but a critical tool for addressing social challenges. Additionally, Designer Chan Ming-ni presented inclusive space design strategies and invited Director-general Yao Ching-yu of the Secretariat to present awards to NTNU students who contributed proposals for the second administrative center, encouraging the next generation to engage in sustainable design.

In closing, Secretariat Specialist Lee Yueh-hsien shared the City Hall’s carbon reduction initiatives. The speakers then opened the floor for audience questions and sparked lively discussions. The success of the forum not only highlights New Taipei City’s efforts toward urban sustainability but also reflects widespread support for sustainable cities. With the deepening integration of design thinking in urban governance, New Taipei has taken another step toward a sustainable urban future.
