Heading to New York to find SDGs partners
Representative of the Secretariat, New Taipei City Government, Ching-Chung Wei, attended the United Nations Forum on Youth Innovation for Sustainable Development Challenges in Cities, the Concordia Forum, and the International Conference on Sustainable Development in Columbia University. Wei was able to share New Taipei’s experience in sustainable development with Professor Jeffrey Sachs, a special adviser to the UN Secretary-General and director of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. Furthermore, Wei also gained the opportunity to demonstrate New Taipei’s achievements in the promotion of SDGs to John Paul Farmer, the chief technology officer of New York City, as well as to officials from the New York City Mayor’s Office and representatives of World Federation of United Nations Associations.

During the United Nations General Assembly, Wei participated in a bilateral meeting with Hirotaka Koike, representative of Japan’s Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). He personally delivered New Taipei City government’s gratitude of IGES displaying in its official website New Taipei’s VLR along with the VLRs of other cities worldwide, engaged in strategic talks on the collaborative sustainable development of cities in Taiwan and Japan, and invited Hirotaka Koike to attend the publication ceremony for the hardback copy of New Taipei’s VLR.

After the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was announced in 2015, New York published its VLR in 2018, becoming the first city worldwide to do so. Following closely behind, New Taipei published its VLR this July, concurrent with Oaxaca (Mexico) and Buenos Aires (Argentina). This places New Taipei as the first city in Taiwan to have published its VLR.
